Welcome to e-Sri Sanai, Raas Purnima, 2009

by Sri Sandip Dasgupta

Joy Babathakur. Joy Babathakur. Joy Babathakur.

Welcome to the Raspurnima issue of e-Sri Sanai. With this issue, we are completing our first year of existence. This has indeed been possible with His blessings – after all it was His idea to get this venture started. With His blessings, several people have stepped up and contributed articles. My sincere thanks go out to all our contributors, readers and supporters. I would also like to commend the hard work put in by our editors (Sri Anjan Dasgupta and Smt. Sroddha Patranabis) in making the venture a success.

Now the challenge for all of us is to spread the word and get a larger body of people to contribute articles in the years to come. Sri Sri Babathakur had asked us to create this media to bring out our spontaneous expression of thoughts. It is my opinion that the articles published so far have indeed planted the seed of spirituality and spiritual thought amongst the readers. The next step is for all our readers to reflect (mananam) on these thoughts and bring out their ideas and understandings in the form of articles. At the same time, we expect to continue to receive well researched and scholarly articles from authors like Mr. Subbu Venkatakrishnan.

On the occasion of Raspurnima, let me attempt to relate one aspect (“I” in “I”) of Sri Sri Babathakur’s seven point formula of “I” (“I” in “I”, “I” of ”I”, “I” from “I”,“I” for “I”, “I” by “I”,”I” with “I”, “I” to “I”, “I” on “I” and beyond and beyond) to the events of Raspurnima.

According to Sri Sri Babathakur, ‘Raas Leela means Divine Sport. It was enacted at Vrindavan on Raspurnima. It was a spiritual performance on the transcendental level, the plane of YogaMaya. Lord Krishna had expanded himself in many forms and stood besides each Gopi (milkmaid) placing His hands on the shoulders of the gopis on both sides of Him and then began dancing in their midst. Each gopi thought that Krishna was dancing with her alone'.

Now, let us look at one possible interpretation of ‘I in I’. Sri Sri Babathakur talks about the existence of two kinds of “I” – a temporary “I” (i.e. Kaccha “I”) and a permanent “I” (i.e. Pakka “I”). In my opinion, “I in I” refers to the I-Reality (the permanent “I”) that resides in each and every one of the individual “I” (temporary “I”) in the world. Each individual “I” mistakenly thinks that he or she has his/her own independent existence, just like each gopi thought Lord Krishna was dancing with her alone. But the reality is that we each owe our existence to that permanent “I-Reality” – in other words all our “individual I”s reside in that permanent “I”. Hence “I” in “I”.

GURUVANI

This is an excerpt of Sri Sri Babthakur’s speech as compiled by S.R. Rajderkar in Science of Oneness (1989)

SCIENCE OF ONENESS OF MAN, UNIVERSE AND GOD

— Sri Sri Babathakur

This is an introductory speech on the “Science of Oneness” delivered by the Master, before the congregation of distinguished personalities — scientists, administrators, educationists, eminent businessmen and ladies, at the Ladies and Children’s Club, Stonyland, Laitmukhrah, Shillong on May 29, 1985. The discourse commenced after the singing of Bhajans by the devotees, and the devotional music by the local artists.

THE RESORT OF THE UNIVERSE

The Master’s speech was all extempore and He started in a most unconventional way, true to His originality and teaching by saying: “The dearest, nearest and most beloved One Infinite Self of me and all, is ever revealing within Itself, out of Its infinite bliss and love, only for the sport’s sake, on assuming innumerable forms by adopting very charming and beautiful masks for the self-purpose and spirit of the game. It is ever-present before me and all of you as well. It is the source of infinite energy of Pure Consciousness – the substratum of all manifestations – subtlemost, subtle and gross. The whole thing is the ‘Sportful Dramatic Sameside Game of Infinite Self-consciousness.’

The entire universe is nothing, but an outer manifestation of that game, the infinite divine drama, in which each individual has a very important role to play as a spectator as well as an actor. All individuals have to pass through all the four dimensions of energy of Pure Consciousness, Divine Reality, designated as ‘Cit-Sakti’ (conscious energy), ‘Para-Prakriti’ (supreme nature), ‘Adya-Sakti’ (Primordial energy and the Devi – Divine Mother).

BEING AND BECOMING

Being and Becoming are two fold nature of the infinite game of Self-consciousness. Their sentient and insentient nature, as the one principle of conscious energy, gives the shape of all individuals, dictates the true aim and purpose of their life, their actions and results as well. Various dimensional manifestations of truth or reality in that game, take place in and through two diversified movements. They are centrifugal and centripetal; the former is the movement from the center (centre) towards the outer, i.e., from Oneness to manyness, and the latter is the movement from the outer towards the inner and the center (centre?), i.e. from manyness to Oneness.

MATERIAL SCIENCE AND SPIRITUAL SCIENCE

The material science and the spiritual science are one in essence, which is the revealing truth to the individuals. Scientists in general have not yet realized it. This truth was first discovered by the ancient Sages of this country after a great deal of research, concentrated investigation and deep observation to find out the true nature of life and creation. To know the reality and the truth of infinite energy resource behind the life and the entire phenomenal creation, they had to follow both the analytical process and concentration of a well-disciplined pure mind. By analytical process they reached the energy source of outer nature of life and creation, and in and through deep concentration and meditation of a pure disciplined mind, they arrived at their Self-Knowledge – the Witness Consciousness, the Divine Reality.

By the light of self-knowledge they realized Oneness that pervades all. Self-knowledge is the true nature of all. It is self-existent, self-effulgent, self-evident Reality, ever-pure, ever-free from the sense of duality of subject and object of inner nature, and diversity of names and forms of the outer nature. It is the background of all understandings, of all manifestations, of all individuals and of the entire universe as well.

TRUTH OF SELF-KNOWLEDGE

The term ‘Sat-Cit-Ananda,’ should be clearly understood because it is threefold designation of Supreme Divine SELF, the One (the Absolute) as well as the quintessence of the Vedas. The great significance of this word lies within it, as it is the most concentrated essence of all supreme ideals, noble virtues, laws, purity, beauty, equality, equanimity, tranquility, serenity, luminosity, unity, identity, infinity and eternity. It is by nature homogeneous. It consists of three words of the same divine essence. ‘Sat’ implies the truth, goodness and the very existence, Absolute. ‘Cit’ means luminosity, self-effulgence, Light of all lights, Knowledge of all knowledge, Awareness of all awareness, i.e. the principle of Consciousness. ‘Ananda’ is the fulfillment of both ‘Sat’ and ‘Cit.’ Each of the terms signifies the divine entity as the Absolute. ‘Sat’ is the essence of the gross, causal and supra-causal. For appearance of anything there must be existence of four dimensions, namely ‘Rupa’ (form), ‘Nama’ (name), ‘Bhava’ (idea), and ‘Bodha’ (consciousness). Each of them has also four subdivisional successive dimensions of the same nomenclature. Supra-causal is the transcendental. ‘Sat’ is illumined by its inherent power ‘Cit’ which is its true nature, the reality within, the underlying essence, the life-pervading truth. ‘Cit’ is infinite and is without beginning and end, and hence it is all bliss and ever-present. ‘Ananda’ – Bliss is immeasurable, limitless and absolute.

The entire creation of our experience is verily ‘Sat-Cit-Ananda,’ the Divine Reality, our very Self. Our existence and the existence of the universe are in essence One. The reality of the universe lies in the Divine Self and not in the appearance. In appearance, it is relative, diversified and hence illusory. Difference of names and forms exists in appearance only but not in essence, and that is only superimposition done by deluded mind out of nescience and ignorance or otherwise admitted as the expression of the Gunas (quality of nature) for the discipline of the spirit of the game.

THE INDIVIDUAL EXPERIENCE

The individual can enjoy and experience the relative existence willfully or unwillingly or can withdraw from it and return to one’s original nature by developing dispassion and detachment towards the objective world. One is to renounce all diversities outside all duality and relativity within. With the help of inner spiritual discrimination, self-analysis, self-enquiry, self-surrender, one directly experiences one’s True Nature.

Relativity, diversity of names and forms, actions and results, all can be easily understood by people, but the knowledge of unity of all, oneness behind all, cannot be attained without proper training. The principle of knower, knowledge, and knowable – the threefold factors are found functioning in life. They are One in essence, known after realization.

VIDYA – SCIENCE OF KNOWLEDGE (WORK OF WISDOM)

The term ‘Science’ means ‘Vidya’ (technique or process). In spiritual sense it is inner knowledge. As inner nature, it is the principle of understanding that reveals itself in various ways in order to unfold the inner glory of life divine. Life is the manifestation or revealing expression of Infinite Self-Consciousness (Divine Consciousness). It contains all the eternal Divine essence in the form of ‘Being and Becoming.’

DISCUSSION FORUM

A Short Excursion:

by Sri Saumen Sengupta

Sri Soubhik Patranabis in his essay “The Lost Dreams” (January 9, 2009 issue of e-Sri Sanai) raises some interesting questions that demand attention along the broad corridors of our awareness. He asks: “But who is a Realizer? How can we become one? Surely engaging in wishful thinking or merely aspiring to become a Realizer doesn’t help much - for the mind should be free of even the smallest of ambitions and aspirations. Self-analysis is the most important thing that is needed. A constant practice is required to ‘Shun the I’, and surely conventional thoughts don’t help out there.”

I’m going to be a devil’s advocate here. Let’s take the second question first: “How can we become one?” Surely, if one is still in the process of “becoming a Realizer”, then we could definitely assert that one is not a “Realizer” as yet. And so long as one is not a “Realizer”, all that one could assert is falsehood. Even this question would have no answer for one engaged in “becoming” a Realizer. We can have all our opinions stacked up to amuse each other, but an opinion has nothing to do with the truth, and truth has no obligation whatsoever to follow an opinion regardless of its overall appeal.

In the question “How can we become one”, there is a desire to become a Realizer, to become enlightened, to become something different from what “I AM RIGHT NOW”. If I’m stupid and ignorant right now, then that’s essentially what I am - no less and no more. Any desire to be different from what one is right now is a mad man’s imagination. Isn’t that the source of our problem? Day in and out, we are struggling to become other than what we are. Why? Why can’t we be just what we are without “becoming”, without aiming for a specific mission, a goal or an ideal? So long I’m on my mission, I’m always separate from my mission – my mission and I remain forever non-convergent. As long as I’m “trying to be good”, I’m not good – and, there will always remain a distance between what I’m and the goodness I think I will reach one day, someday, in some life time, in million-zillion life times. By setting and following a goal, I’m encapsulating myself in my own decorated cocoon from which there is no escape - since I’m my own prison!

Therefore, the question “Who is a Realizer” cannot be answered by a mind already imprisoned in its cocoon. Sri Patranabis observes further: “ … for the mind should be free of even the smallest of ambitions and aspirations”. But, is it not directly contradicting the expressed aspiration implied in “How can we become one?” See the logical discord between the two?

Why is there this demand that the “mind should be free”? How does a mind “know” that? Can a mind, which is never free, ever know “freedom” unless it is dreaming? Why is there this condition of “should”? Is there really a choice? What if I start with the proposition that “mind is never free”? And seeing this as it is, seeing its inability to be free, to become free, am I not directly on the path of truth without imposing the demand that the mind “should” be free?

Sri Patranabis makes another observation: “A constant practice is required to ‘Shun the I’, and surely conventional thoughts don’t help out there.” Practice for what? Is there a skill to acquire? One needs a lot of practice just to hone a skill. Furthermore, who is going to do the practice? Isn’t that the very “I” that one is attempting to “shun” via practice? Is this not another contradiction? Who is going to “shun” the “I” if it is not “I” itself? Is there anyone other than the “I”?

An Unforgettable New Year’s Eve In The Company Of Sri Sri Babathakur

by Smt. Champa Dasgupta

In December 2007, my husband (Shri Anjan Dasgupta), myself and our son (Dev) visited Delhi for a 3-week vacation. Coincidently Sri Sri Babathakur happened to be in Delhi (C R Park) during that time. We were extremely fortunate to receive His Darshan, Guru Vaani and Guidance on several occasions during our stay. Even Dev (just 5 years then) eagerly looked forward to visiting Sri Sri Babathakur everyday and receiving his daily quota of (a chocolate bar) prasad!

On the evening of December 31st, we went to seek out Sri Sri Babathakur’s blessings for the New Year. There were several other devotees waiting to receive His darshan, and the atmosphere resembled one of a close family get-together, with kids playing and adults chitchatting while waiting for Sri Sri Babathakur in the living room.

Bhaktas relaxing and enjoying while waiting for Sri Sri Babathakur

After some time Sri Sri Babathakur emerged from of His room and we all prostrated before Him to receive His blessings. He spoke about many things pertinent to the way one ought to lead his/her daily life. Everyone was eagerly listening to His words and I felt like being in the presence of a kind Mother. A Mother showering blessings on Her kids, assuaging their anxieties with Her soothing words, dissolving their ego and false sense of the Self. It’s hard to describe in words, the immense and pure joy I felt in my heart sitting there listening to Sri Sri Babathakur. I could sense Sri Sri Babathakur’s love for all of us, and felt overwhelmed in the presence of One who doesn’t bare an aorta of grudge against anybody in the world and treats everybody equally. The environment in the room to say the least was absolutely joyous, harmonious and serene.

Sri Sri Babathakur addressing bhaktas

Following Sri Sri Babathakur’s address, we all sat down to have prasad - a wonderfully delicious and filling dinner comprising of vegetable sandwiches, vermicelli with vegetables, aloo dam and chutney. As is His norm, Sri Sri Babathakur checked on everybody during the dinner to ensure that all were being well fed and were enjoying their meal. Dinner was followed by dessert in the form of a huge multi-layered, multi-fruit cake.

The cake!

Sri Sri Babathakur cutting the cake

Sri Sri Babathakur cut the cake and upon the bhaktas' ernest request, had a little bit of the cake. After enjoying the delicious cake, everyone convened outside for a lovely firework display put up to ring in the New Year. It was such a joy having Sri Sri Babathakur amongst us, watching the firework display and cheering everyone on.

Fireworks to herald in the New Year

Shortly after midnight, we all moved back indoors, sought Sri Sri Babthakur’s blessings and proceeded to depart for homes. Without doubt, it was the most auspicious, memorable and joyous New Year’s Eve I have ever experienced. To this day, I am instantly overcome by an immense sense of peace and happiness recollecting the proceedings of that amazing evening spent in the company of Sri Sri Babthakur.

TRANSFORMING KNOWLEDGE INTO WISDOM

by Sri Subbu Venkatakrishnan

I wanted to take this opportunity to share a few insights into why we worship Goddess Saraswati. Goddess Saraswati as you all know is the Goddess of knowledge and wisdom. Now you may ask, why should there be any differentiation between knowledge and wisdom. Well, only when knowledge helps bring about personal transformation does it turn into wisdom. Otherwise it just remains as dry knowledge. And in order to enable this transformation, we need to invoke the grace of the Divine Mother. This is the purpose of worshiping Goddess Saraswati.

As part of the Navaratri tradition, Goddess Saraswati is worshiped during the last segment of the festival. During the first segment, we worship Goddess Durga to help us overcome the self-imposed darkness of ignorance. Goddess Durga whips us out of our sleepy/lazy state of existence and urges us into action. Left to ourselves, we would continue to wallow in the dark dirty muddy waters of laziness like the buffalo. Let me illustrate our current state of existence with an example. One man used to always show up late at work. His boss would get irritated by this behavior and would take great pains to explain what was expected of him. Once this man came in so late that the boss called him into his office and asked for an explanation, to which the man replied, “Sorry, boss. Today, I overslept”. Hearing this, the boss asked, “So, you sleep at home too?” This is similar to our state. The Samskrit word for buffalo is Mahisha. Those of you who chant the “Aigiri Nandini...” stotram know that it is called the “Mahishasura Mardini Stotram”. Another name for Goddess Durga is Mahishasuramardini - the slayer of the demon, Mahisha, and the Mahishasura Mardini Stotram is a hymn praising Goddess Durga. We need the blessings of Goddess Durga to help us shake off this Tamas or Laziness and engage in action. It is not surprising, therefore, that all Masters constantly remind us to get up and act.

Act, we must. But what actions should we choose? Broadly speaking, teachers like their disciples to perform their actions in Seva Bhava----i.e. with an attitude of Seva or service. So, anything we do should be done with this attitude. Any action undertaken to promote the welfare of all is seva. When we pray, “Lokah Samasthah Sukhino Bhavantu, May all be happy”, we are not simply throwing this prayer into cyberspace and expecting that through some miracle everyone will be happy. We are also striving to bring happiness to those around us. When we do this for a long time, we find that our own personal likes and dislikes are neutralized - or in other words, we find ourselves willing to accept all outcomes as God's prasad. This is the only way to erase or annihilate our ego, our sense of I and Mine. We need the blessings of Goddess Durga in this endeavor.

Even after minimizing our personal likes and dislikes through Seva or Karma yoga, we will find that our mind still continues to wander around and is not available for contemplation. Here is where we need the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi. So during the second segment of Navaratri, we invoke the grace of Goddess Lakshmi. We engage in activities such as pooja, or chanting, or meditation to help gain single pointedness of the mind. We specifically set time aside from our busy schedule and create a prayerful atmosphere in our home to undertake an activity such as pooja, chanting, singing bhajans, or meditation. We need to engage in these acts with a great amount of sincerity. The results are directly proportional to the degree of seriousness. Often, we are not sincere in our prayer. Let me use an illustration to explain this further. Once a person was going for a job interview and he was getting late since he could not find parking near the office. At this time, he started praying to God and said, “Lord, if you help me get a parking spot now, I promise that I will drop all my vices, and visit the temple every week, and ….” Just as he was saying this, a car pulled out and a spot became available. Seeing this, the man exclaimed, “Don't worry, Lord, I just found a parking spot”. The point is we need to pray sincerely. When this is continued for a long time, we gain a mind that is relatively free of distractions and available for absorbing the teachings of the Master.

The Master is ever offering words of wisdom, but these words do not sink into our hearts because our mind is not fully available to absorb these teachings. We need to earn the grace of Goddess Saraswati so that the knowledge we gain through the teachings, transforms into wisdom and is able to help us live a fulfilled life. Life as a human being is a gift. It becomes even more precious when we gain the company of a Master. And it becomes fulfilled when we are able to grasp the significance of the Master's teachings and live accordingly. In our hurry, we should be careful not to skip over the essential steps. Only after we have gained the grace of Goddess Durga, do we worship Goddess Lakshmi, and then worship Goddess Saraswati. In the same way, in order to gain knowledge and transform it into wisdom, we need to take the appropriate steps to erase our personal likes and dislikes, and gain single-pointedness of mind. Otherwise, knowledge will not transform into wisdom. The birth of wisdom in our hearts is the birth of the Divine Mother. Let us use this occasion as an occasion to bring about deep transformation within us.

Om Namah Shivaya
